Election deniers in Congress are leading the charge to impeach President Biden
Wisconsin U.S. Reps. Scott Fitzgerald and Tom Tiffany are two of the leading figures pushing to impeach the president, despite a lack of evidence of any crimes.
A new study by a progressive watchdog group finds that the lawmakers behind the current push to impeach President Joe Biden are the same people who sought to overturn his 2020 election victory over President Donald Trump.
The Congressional Integrity Project, a nonprofit group that according to its website works to hold congressional Republicans accountable for “spurious investigations designed to hurt the Biden administration and Democrats and to usher Donald Trump back into power,” released its report “Democracy At Stake: The Same MAGA Republicans Behind January 6th Are Leading the Bogus Impeachment Effort Against President Biden” on Jan. 5
“Trump didn’t act alone – scores of his allies in Congress continue to push his lies to this day in a shameful attempt to restore the disgraced, twice impeached and four-time indicted president to power,” the group says in the report. “In fact, the key players involved in Trump’s scheme to overturn the election in 2020 are the very same Republicans leading the bogus impeachment effort against President Biden.”
The report specifically says that Wisconsin Republican U.S. Reps. Scott Fitzgerald and Tom Tiffany were involved in both efforts:
Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) started spreading false claims about election fraud and so-called irregularities before the votes were even counted, later becoming the only member of the Wisconsin delegation who signed a brief supporting Texas’s lawsuit seeking to throw out the results in his home state. After he voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Tiffany downplayed the violence at the Capitol on January 6th as a “sideshow.” Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI) helped organize efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Wisconsin. In December 2020, while Fitzgerald was still Majority Leader of the Wisconsin Senate, his office provided meeting space in the state Capitol for Wisconsin’s slate of fake electors seeking to overturn the election. Shortly after swearing-in, he became one of just two Republican members of the Wisconsin House delegation to vote against certifying the election results on January 6th.
Tiffany endorsed an impeachment inquiry into Biden in December, saying in a statement, “The American people deserve transparency, and this process will give the House additional investigative abilities to uncover the facts about the President’s involvement in his family’s foreign business deals.”
Fitzgerald said on Dec. 13 that he does not need to uncover facts and would prefer to move straight to impeaching Biden. “If it was up to me, we would,” he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Based on the briefings that we’ve had in closed conference… I think there’s more than enough information there to vote in favor of impeachment to start the trial in the Senate.”
Fitzgerald and Tiffany did not immediately respond to requests for comment for this story.
“Fitzgerald and Tiffany were two of the congressmen most involved in the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election,” Nicole Haley, communications director of the Congressional Integrity Project, said in an email. “They continue their crusade today by attempting to damage President Biden however they can, with no regard for how their bogus impeachment stunts undermine the offices they hold, legitimate Congressional oversight, or the Constitution they swore to protect.”
The House voted along party lines 221-212 to formally approve an impeachment inquiry into Biden on Dec. 14, 2023.
“This whole thing is an extreme political stunt. It has no credibility, no legitimacy, and no integrity. It is a sideshow,” Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern told colleagues during the floor debate.
